Before my disability, when I'd been in clinical allied health doctoral level training, we had a good deal of exposure to additiction medicine, esp for tobacco, being as it directly impacted the patent care I and hose I trained with were being taught to do. That was obviously before such a thing existed, however, what was very clearly and repeatedly emphasized was that smoking, unlike other types of addiction with more genetic predispositions, tended to be what is termed a "learned" addiction. That being said, what was found, in multiple serious, long term, large scale statistical studies, was that patients seeking to stop smoking would typically fail multiple times in the effort, the main goal, whether by nicotine patches, gum, and/or other !etyods, incl laser based analogies to acupuncture on the pinna of the outer ear (which my stepson actually had some success using for awhile), let alone simply stopping cold (which my Dad was able to do, though my mother couldn't, unfortunately), was to continually prolong the period of success, which was why, when I'd been a resident, I and other residents would always refer patients for consults to deal with it...the whole topic here thus merely strikes me as substituting one learned addiction for another...the acupuncture approach I'd mentioned is called auricular acupuncture, which was enhanced by application of laser based approaches, rather than using acupuncture needles, as I said, my son was actually having some genuine success with it for awhile, though he unfortunately eventually stopped going for the treatments....I !erepy thought all that might be of some interest, we shut !y license sevl yrs ago, however, I had considerable exposure to needing to get patients to quit, in order to get them to heal faster, let alone at all, hat was also why I'd thought to offer that perspective, for whatever it might possibly be worth, I'd be most interested in any thoughts and/or observations, certainly, as well, by all means.
