Not a nightmare. Just have to have all your contingencies in place. People think oh you can just take a ski equipped plane out there and pick people up. They haven't seen the surface of glaciers. You need adequate cover without surprises. First landing may be your last. December is the peak of summer so it's as good as it'll get. My trip to Siple was on a ski equipped Twin Otter that had drums of JP-4 in the cabin to make the long hops from Ushuaia to Palmer and then on. Since I was expandable for the flight portion, I got to crank the fuel from those drums. Hercs from McMurdo had stuff in to set up camp and the Otter was used for a few months supporting the ULF research. Seems some Soviet and Livermore scientists thought you might be able to control the weather with this stuff. NOT, as they apparently found out. What was funny is the ULF also went along magnetic flux lines. Longwire that was located in CONUS was on that line. We could communicate with half a watt but the maximum baud rate was so low, it just wasn't viable. Since then we use very high power UHF to just blow straight through the earth with enough data rate to keep the subs happy. Times change.
