There is never enough information published about veteran and civilian suicides. I'm very happy to see there is more information and help out there for those thinking about killing themselves.
For some, everyday life can bring forth demanding situations which may carry a great emotional and psychological burden. And when dealing with such, a person may consider thoughts of suicide or self-harm as the only solution.
The ability to detect when someone is dealing with difficulties in their personal lives can be a challenge, according to an expert on the subject of psychological health.

The greatest overpowering feeling for me was the sense of helplessness of changing my experiences.

I believe it is difficult because we all have different life experiences which causes us to have different resiliency mechanism. We have to be careful not to label someone because of the non-verbal signs but rather to lend a hand because of the non-verbal signs. Labeling an individual could bring more stress than preventing suicide.
