For all of you intelligent Democrats out there - the republicans did not create either of these districts that were struck down by the SCOTUS. Both were created by Democrats in 1992 to comply with the Voting Rights Act.
I am so very happy that you Democrats that are applauding this decision are shooting yourselves in the foot.

LTC Stephen Beller - So the Supreme Court rules previous Supreme Court decision "unconstitutional" after the wrong party follows all the rules and still wins elections. LTC Stephen Beller thank you for stating the obvious. I wish that I could give you a thousand thumbs up for that statement alone.

And in this one, you might want to take a look at District 4.

That is true for the twelfth them though the republicans managed to make is even worse, but with the Fist district that is completely owned by the Republicans

Have you read the decision or what even the Conservative justices wrote? Even the Conservative justices blamed later legislators.

You might enjoy reading the decision and opinions

Completely changed from initial partial statement.
1stSgt Nelson Kerr - It is always the state legislators fault, their the ones responsible for having the districts being drawn. I did read the decision, just like I read the decisions from 1992 (back in the 1991 - 1993 period, when it had a direct impact on me and my family). What is telling is that they are starting to wake up and admitting that this is not a race based problem but a political party problem and that they have contributed to the problem. It also means that a lot more people will have a fair chance of being heard and represented both at the state level and at the federal level. It also finally opens the door to stopping gerrymandering nonsense like NCs District 12 and District 4, it will also help stop the nonsense of redrawing district boundaries to put a representatives place of residence outside their district to unseat them.

And if you read the whole thing, it places equal blame on both Democrats and Republicans (in a number of cases and decisions directly related to this, the blame is squarely on the Democrats, and this applies to both of the litigated districts).

When you look at a map like that, it does look a little strange.

By the way, Justice Gorsuch would not have made a difference.

"Justices Clarence Thomas, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor joined Kagan in the majority opinion. Justice Samuel Alito wrote an opinion agreeing in part and dissenting in part, and he was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Anthony Kennedy. Justice Neil Gorsuch was not involved in this case. "

SGT (Join to see) I would say that it was Pretty Blatantly Obvious. I am Interested if Justice Gorsuch Recused Himself. If He Had, I Can respect That.

I agree Gorsuch was not involved in the questioning , he was allowed to vote but ethically it would be a touch problematic. He did the right thing. That gives me hope.

North Carolina got cut off at the knees, to put it mildly, and were wholly supported by not a single justice. the just disagreed on some of the finer points of how badly NC had screwed up.
