PO3 Steven Sherrill - I probably laughed too hard at that one. Seriously though, studio monitors and mic pre-amps don't like random spikes. That can cause an instant degradation to audio I/O quality.

SGT (Join to see) - I deal with financial planners. They mostly use lap tops because they can take them when they visit clients. When they call and ask what kind of UPS they need for their laptop, I have on occasion found it difficult to not send them out to buy the biggest UPS they can fit in the trunk of their car. You can only answer the same question from the same people so many times.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - Well that's completely different from a No.2 pencil. The nicest answer would be to get an extra battery and/or a hi-capacity laptop battery.

I have never used a UPS. I think they're a waste of money. The power grid here is stable enough, and the once-every-two-years or so a storm knocks it out, it's easy enough to do something else. I do use surge protectors though.

You are correct. A laptop runs on its battery, even when plugged into an electrical outlet. In effect, it is the same as a desktop plugged into a UPS. Surge protectors are an even bigger joke. The ones you can purchase for $10 or $20 have mechanical switches that could never react fast enough to protect a computer from a real surge.

CPT Jack Durish You get what you pay for. When it comes to surge protectors it is less how much the protector costs, and more how much is it going to cost to replace the items plugged into it.
