I often wonder how many people I hurt by telling them to read the "Bell Jar" by Sylvia. Most of them were girls my age back then (twenties) and fighting some form of depression. In her they found a kindred soul..but one who's grip on reality was tenuous at best, and a lie at worst. I wonder why we consider tragedy and despair such high gifts, and ignore the idea of solid and content? Oh, well, I can say that I am not likely to recommend either her poetry or her one book of Fiction to anyone younger than fifty, male or female.

I know what you are talking about. I read her when young, and many people I knew read her as well. The younger generation is not very adept at discerning what is right and what is wrong, or understanding the permanence of a single action and its repercussions. SGT Kevin Hughes

SGT (Join to see) - I know David, I harbor some guilt over thinking (back then) that putting a depressed person in contact with a depressed poet, would somehow warn them about the dangers of their thoughts. Instead most found only a shared commonality - and one that they seemed to think made them more Heroic and important. Copycats at the worst time.
