Just on a personal note, I hated the black beret as the everyday head gear. Did not think it was very well suited to be worn out in the field, or for a mechanic etc.

SSG (Join to see) agreed. I wore a regular field cap when I was patrolling missile fields. That way I had some blockage of sunlight. That, and it (the field cap) wasn't squeezing my brains out...lol

If you were in the field, a black beret was hot on your head, hard to put on when your hands were full, and just plain silly, glad we went back to soft caps for the ACU ETC and left the beret for a dress uniform.

SSG (Join to see) - oh, Amen. It's damn near impossible to put one (beret) on properly one-handed.

I wore my patrol cap as often as I could, even while in an Airborne unit.
SSgt (Join to see) While I was retired when the black beret came out, i did wear it a few times when I wore my blues to different functions and I hated it. Could not get a good look out of it, went back to wearing my dress blue service hat.
