SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL TBI can certainly be a significant injury.
I never had TBI while in the military; but, I had TBI when I was a child just outside of Philadelphia when i slipped hit my head on the ice. I had amnesia and lost all memory of that day. The most traumatic part was nobody believed I couldn't remember what had happened throughout that day. I had been throwing up on and off at school and kept asking what time it was - it was while I was in 3rd grade.

LTC Stephen F. yes indeed, I escaped two IED attacks in 2004 and I have some residuals of TBI, in which I have been diagnosed with. It is life altering. This site is the one VA uses and they gave it to me to read up on TBI. Just want to share for general knowledge and if it can help any Veterans out there.

I strongly encourage everyone to see the movie Concussion. Helmets protect the skull, not the brain. Axonal shearing often occurs due to the speed/sudden stop micro differentials that occur between brain matter of two different densities (white and gray matter), and the tau proteins that subsequently and cumulatively form as plaques accounts for the loss of cognition, at minimum.

A1C Doug Towsley I have seen info regarding tau proteins on other sources. So far there is no way to check until autopsy the last I heard. A lot of research is being done using football players due to their high rate of head injury,

Update on new ways to follow TBIs, the focus is on sports (footballs) player injuries but I can see the crossover for vets in Medline Plus, a weekly bulletin I subscribe to; several other topics of interested to our community are research and papers written.
