The rift between Memphis and Nashville is quite real, SSG(P) (Join to see). However, Memphians are far more concerned than are Nashvillians. It started with the Tennessee Titans. They were in Memphis for a year before moving to Nashville. Also, the NHL came to Nashville and not Memphis.
The reason behind all this is quite simple. Money. The per capita income in the middle Tennessee area is far greater than that of Memphis. It's not likely that Memphis could sustain either or both franchises.
There was a time when the cities were similar in size, but Nashville has outstripped Memphis now in any growth category that matters. People are moving into Nashville everyday by the thousands. In Memphis, it's an exodous.
The statue thing was unnecessary, both on the part of the City of Memphis and the Tennessee General Assembly, IMO.
