The Parties (both of them) have evolved dramatically over the last 50 years. If we were to take candidates today and apply "old school" standards to them, many of our Democrats would be classified as Republicans.

However, as for Mr. Trump. He has declared himself as a Republican, and is running on the Republican ticket. He is the Republican Candidate per the Republican Party rules.

At most, someone can call him a RINO (Republican in name only).

COL Lee Flemming Well, pretty much by definition, he is, regardless of what the Dallas newspaper would like for him to be, or how they define "Republican". As if Democrats are allowed to span the range from full-on socialists to moderate Southern democrats, but Republicans can only have one firmly fixed position across all issues.

COL Lee Flemming - Only OK? In spite of the numerous and deep policy differences between Trump and old-school GOP, I'd bet he will receive over 80% of the Republican base vote. Why? They are in a box with only one way out. But whether he's widely and deeply supported by the Republican base, is a different question than the one asked up top.

As you allude to, we get into "no true Scotsman" territory here.

The fact of the matter is that people change. You can be a big supporter of something one minute and then something happens to make you question your own support. Trump is the monkey wrench thrown into the gears of the political establishment. The left doesn't like him, the right doesn't like him. That's evidence enough that he is sincere. Just because you switch sides doesn't mean you are insincere, it just means you had a change of opinion. I'm not even a Trump supporter, but I can see why he is appealing.

I disagree on your assessment of what Trump is (I think he's very much a product of the cultural, rather than political, establishment) but you're spot on in that first sentence. We all grow and change!

Hell, I've gotten halfway into an argument and realized I was dead wrong...did that make me back down? Noooo. That would be reasonable and we can't have that!
