In the dark regions located way back in the mind of every pilot lies a serious concern - what to do if the aircraft is on fire and no means of escape? A "Well Done" to the B-1B Lancer's crew, especially the ac Commander. If there is a crew member who cannot escape, every pilot I know would not hesitate to attempt to land the aircraft instead of abandoning the trapped crew member. During WW II, there was a song called "Coming In On A Wing And A Prayer". This was exemplified many times by the B-17's and her crews. Back in the days before satellites, we flew a WRB-29. Having a radar problem that manifested itself only in the air and not on the ground, we took off with Radar Techs aboard to try and resolve the problem. Orbiting the lower part of Puget Sound, the starboard inboard engine caught fire and would not extinguish. When it exploded, the starboard outboard engine became damaged. Because in difficulty in controlling the aircraft, the bail-out bell signaled evacuation of the aircraft. Ascertaining all had gotten out, we took leave also. All parachuted safely except for the navigator who suffered a broken ankle.
