Comment from the Bourbon State.
The cost of a good bourbon does not always correspond with price. There are lots of bourbon that are in the same taste category at Pappy Van Winkle without costing the months paycheck. Whiskeys, like beers, go through various stages of popularity according to what's supposedly hip at the time. Recently, that's like the IPA craze, some very mediocre bourbons are popular because "everyone" is drinking them.
Evan Williams and Jim Beam Black are just a drinkable as Pappy, about my price limit on a bottle of bourbon tops out at Knob Creek.
