The Air Force wants a multi-role aircraft that can provide both air to air and air to ground missions. In my opinion, getting rid of the A-10 would be a huge mistake. You need aircraft for specific roles like the A-10. The A-10 proved it's effectiveness in Desert Storm.

Carlos I am just a knuckle dragging barbarian so I am far from an avionics expert. However, I know from the ground level what it can do. I have to say from my point of view it is a badass, sexy as hell killer. I know they are getting old and are pretty beaten up from years of constant use but I feel confident no matter what it replaced with those of us that remember her when the bullets start flying will miss her.

One of my all time favorite planes. One of the problems is that the ranking generals are fighter jocks and this is not a "cool" sexy plane to them and they want it to go away. I disagree vehemently.

I did a similar story and asked the same question. One person here on rallypoint stated that there are too many generals and Engineers with their careers at stake and that's why they're pushing the F-35 which should be called the Ford Edsel, the Ford pinto, the Chevy Vega and the Hugo of the sky. You could tell by the way Senator John McCain had to deal with this General. This is military industrial complex that President Eisenhower warned about in 1959. But it's more like the movie Sergeant Bilko done with Steve Martin. It's funny that somebody with a 5.56 mm or larger machine gun or automatic weapon can destroy an F-35 while the A10 is designed to take a 23mm armor piercing or high explosive soviet-made shell and still protect the pilot.
