This would be a really cool, albeit likely fatal collision. It will take eons to complete the transition to a larger merged galaxy, which I find interesting. As big as both are, and as fast as we are going through space, you'd think that the merger might take a few years instead of thousands of earth years. The other interesting thing would be the super massive black holes in both galaxies devouring each other. If both are destroyed what happens to the gravitational field that holds the galaxy together? If one wins the battle, will the gravitational force of the victor change the alignment of the new galaxy?
Science is cool, but nobody knows all the answers and there are always questions.

Excellent commentary PO3 Shayne Seibert! I am sure that there will be some fatal collisions, yet with the tremendous space between objects in space, one Galaxy could pass through another galaxy and the final structure would be a much larger Galaxy with a new Central Core... Black holes will absorb other black holes and who knows what else, but the end result in billions of years will be something to behold... Gravitational forces will indeed do their jobs, but as you wrote, "Nobody knows all the answers and there are always questions," but it is interesting to contemplate what might happen and what the result will be...

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen, Can you elaborate on what you suspect has been going on in the Universe for millenniums?
