Bwahahaaaa, they'll spend millions and go through painstaking trials and we'll get endless "teaser" articles in Army Times and then after 4 or 5 years of dog-and-pony the M-16 Mafia will get tired of it all and shut it down with another pronouncement that the M16 series and 5.56 is the only weapon system sanctified by God, forever, the end.
The M-16 family (which includes the M4) is deeply ingrained in the logistics and training system, and no one wants to accept anything that might add yet another platform to the supply chain. This is as much due to fiscal restraints as it is to old dogs' clinging to "what we've always done". Even if it is 5.56 it will still add new demands to armorers and storage, so this is going to end up as another good intention that dies an ignominious death.
