Great article. A few more details-

Marmaduke's forces camped on the south side of South Creek the night before the battle, about 4 blocks from our house. There is a great series of 12 signs throughout the town that make up a very informative driving tour of the main sites of this battle.

One of the keys to the successful defense was BG Brown's decision to use the militia and convalescents from the hospital to hold his forts leaving his one regular regiment, the 18th Iowa, to use in a maneuver role. He also had a contingent of militia cav that he used as a mobile force, as well. There were 4 wide streets radiating from the town square, and a couple of cannon were placed there to fire on the Rebel cav whenever they tried to cross from one quadrant of the town to another. Between those cannon dominating the major avenues, the stoutly defended forts, and the 18th Iowa pushing at the Rebel cav throughout the day, BG Brown insured the safety of the supply depot.

I worked as a SPED teacher for 9 years at Boys and Girls Town Missouri. Our athletic field was on the former site of Fort #3, on Fort Street, of course.
