When I was in the ad biz I heard a story attributed to an ad exec for Lever Brothers Corporation. After suffering through several campaign presentations by the company's ad agency he was unable to explain his reasons for rejecting them all. "They're cute and entertaining but not memorable," he complained but the ad agency people were not moved. Finally, he stood and hocked a large glob of spittle on his desk top. The others in the room were aghast. "There," he explained. "Yes, that was disgusting, but you won't ever forget it." I sure they didn't just as I have never forgotten the story. "Piggly Wiggly" may seem dumb, but you'll never forget it and that is the purpose of advertising.

I worked at the first Piggly Wiggly in Tacoma, WA when I was a teenager, in the early 60’s. I was a box boy and stocked shelves.

A good story - I had hoped to learn the age old secret behind the name but alas, it was not to be.
