I think if you have been awarded the CIB you know in your heart if it was earned or not,my take on it anyway.

My CIB was definitely earned with the Americal Division in Vietnam. I am proud of my service in the infantry. I hope that the army does not give participation awards that degrade the honor and status of the CIB. D/1/6, 198th Light Infantry Bde., Americal Division. 1970

I have heard tales that from time to time awarding of the CAR or CIB etc has been abused leading to a reduction in their cred in the eyes of some. I have 'heard'/read tales where a plane landed in such as Panama the troops got out, and were all awared a badge of some sort for participation in combat. I have heard similar stuff about the Bronze Star. If tales like this has any truth to it, no wonder the badge(s) comes under fire. The criteria for awarding any badge should be strictly upheld and no exceptions made.

I’ve not heard those stories or had those experiences, but that does not mean they did not happen. I do know that the the Army Infantry has borne the brunt of the Service’s casualties over the last 16 years.

Any award should be truly earned otherwise there true meaning will be reduced to just something to add color to the uniforms

The CIB which I earned May 28, 1967 was on action against an armed enemy in combat not because I, was their but because I met the enemy and held my ground on the second award I was visiting A base one day saw A young Soldier who had CIB with star ask him how he got the star he said because he won his first in Bosnia and his second in Iraq my question is I got into firefight while on night patrol in 1966 in Korea didn't recieve award then while we are still technically at war with North Korea should my award in Vietnam should have been my second award just asking.

SGT Marvin Austin Sr. - Very good question. Very possible they did not have the equivalent of the CIB or CAR in Korea!
