This movie was made in the 50's and they were censored so they had to hold back on what really happened.

PO2 (Join to see) lol so no mint on the pillow? 50s drill sgts had to have been utter hell. Most likely all had been in the sheer terror of WW2

SGT Justin Brothen Exactly. Those DI 's at that time were the worst SOB's you could ever meet. Hollywood couldn't make the movie like real life.

My dad was a Marine during the Korean War. He said R. Lee Ermey portrayal of the DI in Full Metal Jacket was close to what he went through, but his Di's were worse and tougher. The stories he told me were brutal. His Senior Drill Instructor was a veteran of the Korean War and he was really hard on them during their training. Punching, slapping, and kicking recruits was normal. He told me he was having trouble holding his M1 Garand out to the side and off the ground. The Senior Drill came over and asked him if he need some help holding his rifle up. He removed my dad's bayonet and put the heel of the knife in his web belt and the point of the knife under his bicep like a brace. My dad said he had blood running down the blade of the bayonet. Leaving the bolt open on their rifles on the firing range was a serious mistake. Dad said they had large snails all over the training area and the DI's would put a snails in any open rifle bolt and let the bolt slam shut.
