I would have been surprised had the outcome been any different and really exposes the incorrectness of the myth of the "self made man."

Of course the real problem with the myth of the self made man is that as soon as you buy into it, it becomes justification for thinking that people who are not successful, or poor, or whatever are that way strictly because it is their fault. With that thinking comes the idea that they deserve what they get. The reality is that their situation in most cases isn't primarily due to their own making, perhaps in some cases partially, but perhaps in some cases not at all.

Luck appears to favor the prepared. Also, it helps to work hard and get to know the right people. Success may not come over night. Most of the time it is earned.
