I would not say they had been forgotten SGT John " Mac " McConnell especially since we are discussing the story of Sylvester James Cummins. Ireland separated long after Scotland broke away from British rule. While it was about 100 years ago those were turbulent times as empires were broken up [Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman] and attempted genocide [Armenian]
During the bombing of London during the Battle Of Britain the war department building which housed enlisted records was badly damages with most records destroyed.
I have been able to find out from family records about my paternal grandfather who was a lance corporal in the British Army at Gallipoli, Turkey and in the trench warfare in France and Belgium where he was wounded.
His brother George also served; but, there is no record of him other than that he and his wife were killed by a bomb during the Battle Of Britain which destroyed their house but their two youngest children survived [one in a closet and the other under a table.
