The Mongols controlled Russian Principalities even in winter maneuvers. They were tough fighters. If the Russian forts opened their gates without fighting, he spared the occupants. If they resisted, everything in the fort with a heartbeat was killed.

How did the Mongols do so well in Russia? Each soldier had 4 horses so supplies can be taken on a campaign. Flocks of farm animals were taken as well. They were well organized into formations small to large. If need be, the Mongols drank the blood of their horses. It was also said Mongol horses had the advantage in winter because it knew how to break the ice for fodder.
