This has always blown my mind. A submersible aircraft carrier with deck guns a cruiser would be proud of. Pretty sure this was the largest submersible until the Los Angeles came around.

We actually explored the idea in the late 10's, early 20's. USS S-1 had a hangar and floatplane. The Germans took the idea to a combat conclusion with helo's similar to drones, flying from the decks of some U-Boats. The idea being forward spotting to get more targets. We abandoned the idea virtually the moment we made it as it was too many holes to make watertight which is always a fear/bugaboo onboard a submarine.
As fortunes turned against Japan, the huge submarine classes were used to ferry supplies and were actually somewhat successful in that role.
