I think modern warfare is inherently asymmetric. Unfortunately, traditional relationships can't really be developed or trusted. I think just as we are skeptical of local leaders in other nations we engage with, they are rightly skeptical of us and I think deep down everybody knows that in the end each party seeks after their own self interest. Dealing with others as trusted members of a family, who are likely to seek their own self interest, I think is a strategic error.

We're calling this a hybrid threat now combining conventional, asymmetric, and other emerging threats on the battlespace.

It is interested to read how that trust broke down for the french.. and the then what happened when such was broken. At 50 plus years later - the very views of whose self interest was in the nation's best interest have changed. Excellent point SFC Brandenburg!!!!!!
