Unfortunately Francd's military capabilities took a downward turn and have not recovered

They ebbed and flowed throughout history.. Napoleon and Nap III both provided high points.. and low points last century.

I have seen French soldiers operationally. Don't let the weakness of their government mislead you about the French soldier.

They used to be bigger whiners, but with Desert Shield - Desert Storm, IFOR, SFOR, and the GWOT their self respect has grown from insecure haughtiness to more mature members of the Western Alliance. We expect more from them and they expect more from themselves. Nevertheless their civilian authorities can be real pains and give pause to many of us before totally relying upon them. To all that you add the Légion étrangère. They are the dregs, very disciplined, nasty talking, smelly, filthy and aggressive military unit in the world. They also have the best ROE I have ever seen.
