I think most of us with "Southern Roots" going back to the Civil War or further, can cite some pretty significant loss of property, wealth and life...regardless of which side they fought on. My ancestors were Union supporters...but ended up losing everything anyway. It took from then to my Dad to get above poverty level. That said, it's difficult to make direct correlations when you factor in the effects of an agrarian economy losing ground to the Industrial Revolution...and the Great Depression.
I think the stronger ties are emotional, as it's pretty hard not to feel like (at times) the "innocent" are often made to answer for the past. Maybe one of these days, everyone will understand that "they" can't use "Dixie" as an excuse to label an entire cultural identity "invalid" or "obsolete".
...and I'll stop there before I get on a soapbox and overstate my case :)
