“There’s no armor in Iraq and Afghanistan, so our original purpose just isn’t there,” Evidently, this is the last war we will ever fight.
I do not know if training budgets have chaged from the 80's and 90's. Back then my 0351's were still waiting YEARS for a replacement to the M202 Flash, (which had a nasty habit of injuring the Marine firing it). They never saw any type of breaching ordnance. We made our own field simulations out of pieces of logs that were "close."
I think it was criminal to expect them to do one of the most dangerous tasks and infantry many can do; breach fortified positions, and expect them to re-familiarize themselves with the tools of the trade under fire. And combat engineers ARE NOT going have enough detachments to support every rifle company. This is a colossal mistake.

I’d rather see a reshuffle than redundancy. I notice that the 08xx MOSs that used to be Forward Observer (can’t recall the number) and 0849 Shore Fire Control Party got all rolled into 0861 Fire Support Marine.
It eliminated a needless redundancy & increased the skill set of the new guys.
I don’t see Combat Engineers as organic to each operational unit but i DO see them assigned as needed.

Sgt Wayne Wood - Three Letter companies in a Combat Engineer Battalion. In MEB or MEF operations, against a conventional forces opposing force, your typical Rifle company WILL see bunkers, trenches, minefields, abbattis, wire obstacles, tunnel complexes. If history is any teacher, what your typical rifle company won't see... a detachment of combat engineers.

Sgt Wayne Wood - Once again it's a budget issue. I don't know if this has changed, but I never saw a dime for breaching ordnance in the FMF for Rifle Battalions. We never saw claymores let alone, bangalores, shaped charges, or satchel charges.

I still can’t understand why they got rid of the 106...
Nothing like flechette going downrange :-)
