COL Lee Flemming, I find Tulsi Gabbard's absence from this list to be at least a little surprising. She's currently serving her second term in the U.S. House (D-2nd District-Hawai'i). She's also a major in the HIARNG. She was a vice-chair of the DNC (which got complicated) but resigned to endorse Bernie Sanders.
She was a darling of the Democratic Party during the previous administration. Despite the new administration, I would expect her to rebound and resurface this year.

I can think of many veterans that are working at the grass roots levels of Veterans Services Organizations as volunteers in the hospitals and who are assisting veterans in filing their claims with the VA and representing veterans in their appeals before the VA. You do not have to be an actor, entertainer, politician nor CEO in order to make a difference.
Many of these grass root volunteers do more for veterans every day of their lives than these few listed as "Veterans to watch in 2017" will do in their entire lives and most of them will go unrecognized but will still continue to perform their service to the veterans day after day after day. These are the "real" veterans to watch in 2017 and these are the veterans who will make a significant difference in the lives of many other veterans in 2017 and beyond.
