Interestingly, the most decorated ship in USN history is the USS Parche (SSN-683), and she got most of those decorations basically, spying. PO1 William "Chip" Nagel

In the book "Blind Man's Bluff", Cmdr Richard Buchanan was the CO of the Parche. President Reagan called him a "modern day John Wayne." I think the sub was awarded a total of seven PUC's. He was my CO (then CAPT) at Comsubgru 7. How he managed to navigate inside a sub i'll never know. He was at least 6'6, very imposing guy, retired as a RADM.
