That reminds me of one distinct advantage of attending USMA at West Point SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. USMA cadet has no gender connotations associated with it. When I entered the Corps of Cadets in 1976 with the first group incoming cadets that included women nobody needed to consider changing the name.
Here is some historical background to help put this concept into perspective CW5 (Join to see) CW5 Charlie Poulton CSM Charles Hayden SSG Warren Swan
The irony is women entered USNA at Annapolis at the same time over 40 years ago and nobody changed the name then. It would be foolish for USNA to change the name of those who attend USNA at this point.
In June 1976 women entered USMA as cadets, USNA as midshipmen, and the US Air Force Academy as cadets. The US Merchant Marine Academy accepted women two years earlier in 1974 where students are called midshipmen as well.
That is not saying the name of the midshipmen won't happen but I hope it doesn't.

Women came to Annapolis in 1976 as part of the first class which integrated women into the Naval Academy - happened at each of the Academies - West Point, Kings Point, Air Force. Therefore to be technical at Annapolis midshipmen came before females at Annapolis CSM Charles Hayden :-)
