Every culture has its black moments. America is no exception. Sadly, many use these to attack the culture, as an excuse to "fundamentally transform" us. But, let's put things into perspective. America is not the sum of its history. It is people fleeing their history and rising above it. Well, at least it once was. The vast majority of Americans came from somewhere else or were born here of people who came from somewhere else. Hell, even the American Indians are not indigenous if you look back far enough into their history. Try as we might to escape out history, we brought a lot of it with us or inherited it from our forebearers. Slavery. Denial of rights to women. None of these things were invented here, but they were practiced here until We the People chose not to. Fortunately, those who crafted our Constitution did not codify these things. Indeed, it may be argued that they gave us the freedom to change all that we discovered to be reprehensible. Hopefully we will continue that practice. However, we can't if we surrender our freedoms. If we surrender freedom of speech to political correctness. If we surrender our rights to petition our government for redress of our grievances. If we surrender our right to defend ourselves from tyranny.

Following the Sand Creek incident, a town was named Chivington to honor the commanding officer of Colorado's 3rd Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (known in Denver as The Bloodless 3rd" due to it's lack of combat experience) which carried out the massacre. The town of Chivington is still located not far from the massacre site, out there on Southern Colorado's high plains.

Sad piece of history but it shows that even Americans weren't exempt from atrocities given the right set of circumstances.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen It was a terrible incident. It is good that we record the good and the bad of our history.
