Another side to this story, I am of Cuban descent on my mother's side and from the Cuban point of view many of them believed that the Americans had a hand in the destruction of the Maine as a an excuse to insert themselves into the war. Depends on your perspective, conspiracy theories abound.
In most of the research I have done the explosion in the magazine seems to be the most plausible. It was a design flaw of that class of warships.

I can well understand what you say. When you read the last line: " In 1976, a team of American naval investigators concluded that the Maine explosion was likely caused by a fire that ignited its ammunition stocks, not by Spanish mine or act of sabotage."

Great Story, Quite Familiar with it having visited the Maine Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery many times.
