The Terrifying Physics of WWII Dive Bombing

Very unusual for the Smithsonian to curate something that I believe to be fraught with errors. I had a friend whose father flew a Navy Dauntless dive bomber in WWII and his explanation doesn't square with this presentation on two counts. Firstly, the pilot is focused on his target through a long tubular site and has no depth perception and cannot see the altimeter spinning wildly as he dives. Thus, the rear gunner calls out the altitude as they plummet towards the target. Secondly, after dropping the bomb, if the pilot pulls back on the stick without first slowing, the wings might be ripped off the plane. Thus, the pilot deploys the large air brakes on each wing before pulling out of the dive.
