Today we honor a member of the “Greatest Generation” Medal of Honor Signalman 1st Class Douglas A. Munro who is to date the only Coast Guard member to receive the MOH, 78 years ago today he volunteered for a mission to rescue approximately 500 Marines including their Commander LTC Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller. One man gave the ultimate sacrifice so that a detachment of Marines would live. The greatest generation knew true sacrifice some growing up in the depression and then volunteering to fight a 2nd world war to preserve their family’s freedom and liberty’s back home.
