There are thousands of people who were US citizens at birth (abroad to one or two US citizen parents) who are completely unaware of their US citizenship.

Oxymoron, if they are citizens (of the United States) they are by nature documented.

Not necessarily. Citizens born abroad may only have the birth certificate from the host country. Documentation isn't automatic, and the process can be confusing. My mom didn't even speak English when I was born.
