Part of the problem is actually the diversion of funding from public schools to charter schools. Instead of educating kids, some have dubious operating practices. Some overly focus on field trips with little actual academic instruction. One operated as a nightclub that served alcohol after hours.

I keep hearing this argument, however the decline in the quality of education started before and was the principle cause of the rise of charter schools. Had it been the other way around, I too might have been fooled into believing this. And again, the teachers unions would have far more luck fighting charter schools if they offered a better service, if they actually taught students rather than indoctrinated them.
