It was first awarded in 1956 to the sport’s most outstanding pitcher – singular, as there were not two awards, one per league, until 1967. The first recipient was the Dodgers’ Don Newcombe, who won MVP honors that year in the NL, as well. Newcombe ushered in a new era of annual pitcher appreciation.
I am sure my parents knew this player...my mother was a fanatic Dodgers fan

As am I. Newk could have accomplished so much more had he not lost those two years to the army during the Korean War. He wound up being traded after the '58 season (the Dodgers' first in LA), but he came back and spent many years as a pit.ching coach and scout before he died. He was one hell of a pitcher and a very nice man.
