So a homogeneous population is the happiest. Surprise!

I agree with that point and or just deport them to Norway, Sweden, Findland, etc. These nations have the population of New York City. Why not ask a Texan if they are happy in Texas. I bet the Hell Yes vastly outnumber the Beto’s. SGT(P) (Join to see)

MSgt Michael Smith - In the case of the Nordic countries, homogeneous applies to race, ethnicity, and religion.

Racial makeup: Less than 1/10th of 1% something other than Caucasian or Sami (ethnic indigenous aboriginals)

Ethnic makeup: Finn 93.4%, Swede 5.6%, Russian 0.5%, Estonian 0.3%, Romani 0.1%, Sami 0.1% (2006)

Religious makeup: 72.9% Lutheran, 21.2% Other Christian Protestant, 3.7% Catholic, 2.2% Other or no affiliation.

These are all interesting points. For what it is worth, I tack up general happiness to security. I think people in Nordic countries like the security they have in terms of medical care and pensions. Most Americans do not have this kind of security and it makes the future unpredictable, causing lots of anxiety. As to the question of immigration I think that migrants are coming to America in troves because we are the closest country to them that offers some hope and safety. It's not like they have a lot of choices of where to go. They can't go South (Amazon Rainforest, impenetrable mountain ranges) They can't go East of West (lots of water) So they go North.

You are confusing security with dependency. Enjoy the shackles and chains. MSgt Michael Smith

There are likely a few primary causes for the outcome in my opinion.
1. Most Europeans have lower expectations than Americans and tend to be more easily kept happier
2. They do not value freedom as dearly as we do and hence don't mind massive government structures that dominate their life from cradle to grave.
3. Many of these countries have relative small populations. Number 1, 2 and 3 all have populations < 5.8 million each. Iceland comes in at 343,000. The NL is the largest in the top 5 at 17 million.
4. These surveys do not look at things such as immigration and who is trying to immigrate where. I think is safe to say more people are coming to the US (or trying to) than any other country on the planet. People vote with their feet.
5. Most surveys, like polls are BS

America is great, just look where people want to go. We have higher expectations than most other countries too. We are also dying a slow death of identify politics which is causing factions in the population which is unhealthy. European nations tend to be more homogenous than we are too.

Correlation doesn't equal causation. These countries might be the happiest in spite of Democratic Socialism, not because of it.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be happy in a country in which I had to pay higher taxes and basic rights like freedom of speech and private citizens owning firearms wasn't enshrined in the country's constitution.
