This is a Great historical read as well as a good current focus. 30 years back.. would have loved to have had read this and had a copy of it when was taking a course on Russian History.. Some of our known history of Russia is often not focused on the aspects that are included in this read.. its the parts so often left out that do not provide you with a whole picture. That said - think all will enjoy this article!

Use of partisans, auxiliaries, and mercenaries is not unique to Russia. Activities like that go way back to antiquity. What is unique to Russia is their artful use of deception (Maskirovka) in their statecraft. It is woven into military operations, conventional and otherwise. It is a shaping operation in diplomacy, subversion, economic penetration, information operations, and sphere of influence activities. They are extremely good at it.
We would be wise to be aware that there is constant deception going on when we are dealing with the Russians. Know that, and their motives will help suss out what it true and what is disinformation and distraction.
