Remember when draftees got US numbers, and Volunteers got RA numbers? Seems like it was in the early '70s that everyone started going by Social Security numbers. I still remember my RA# (It could still have use as a computer password, I suppose).

I'd have to ask my Dad about that one, depending on the year they did that, he might have been right on the cusp, having first joined up in the early 70s. He volunteered willingly, though. I've heard everywhere that back then if you ran afoul of the law, the judge gave you a choice of prison, or military, and a lot of ranks got filled that way.

I can never tell. Some guys are better at snowing than others, and it's not like I'm looking to pry anyhow. I've noticed that most combat vets tend to discuss the big stuff with others who've been through the same thing, and generally just don't volunteer some guts and glory story, over coffee and pie, all willy nilly like that.
