You are correct on that point SGM Earl Richburg and yes giving up is never the answer. the online application process can be impersonal But its the new skill to master.

It reminds me of how we went from in-person promotion boards to a paper packet board. At the time I hated the in-person boards; reporting to the president of the board, answer questions, but now that I look back there was value in that.

Those boards were intimidating, but you got a chance to stick your chest out and show them who you were. No so with the paper packets they view from now. Especially if your packet wasn't properly prepared.

The online application is too broken and impersonal these days from both a recruiting and candidate perspective. The only way to truly guarantee getting the job you want is to leverage your network and get in front of the manager. Sometimes a well connected recruiter is your best bet, at other times it is a simple LinkedIn message asking a decision maker to meet you for coffee. I can't stand online job boards and avoid them like the plague

I often feel the same as you, and agree that strong networking skills can help you leverage your way to that dream job, BUT, some of those dream jobs require the fortitude to complete the online application process, and there is just no way around it. Best to master it, and overcome the obstacle while everybody else is busy kicking rocks and complaining. Strike while the iron is hot, and keep throwing more irons in the fire

Not to say you can avoid the online application process, but I have always tried to speak to a decision maker before throwing my name in the hat

I agree with you, and the article. One prayer is that a standardization for the applicant tracking system across all platforms and websites could be created, OR recruiters could actually take the time to read the submitted resumes instead of just the first ten lines of the first ten resumes that manage to make it through the filter hoops of the ATS
