High school graduation rates. Used as a proxy for "education levels". Did they factor in the HS graduation criteria? No. Did they add a factor for education beyond HS? No. Did they cross-check against national literacy rates? No. So, while the problem is real, the map is mostly hype.

Col Joseph Lenertz - Colonel; The map could be "mostly hype" but that doesn't mean that it is totally false.

The National Center for Educational Statistics data is sounder (even if it is still depressing).

COL Ted Mc I've said it before: the only thing the US is #1 in anymore is military spending and the percentage of our adult population that's incarcerated. Having said that, this 'map' seems rather arbitrary and contrived.

SN Greg Wright - Seaman; I tend to agree with the "evidence" (not necessarily the "experts").

The "evidence" is that we are in a period of "global warming". The "experts" say either [a] "The warming is caused by humans and only human actions can reverse it." or [b] "The warming isn't caused by humans and that means we should continue to dump crap into the atmosphere because dumping crap into the atmosphere isn't the cause of the warming.".

BOTH sides appear to have taken the position that "contributed to" and "caused by" are identical in meaning. They aren't.

Equally, BOTH sides appear to have decided that the Earth's climate system is NOT in any way even remotely connected to the concept of "dynamic equilibrium" and that there is no such thing as a "tipping point" in systems which are in "dynamic equilibrium".

My position is [a] "Global warming" is CONTRIBUTED TO by human activity (even though that contribution is of a minor nature due to the immense effect of solar radiation)"; [b] "Dumping crap into anything that you are going to be consuming isn't ever a good idea even if you think that your system can absorb the amount of crap that you think that you are dumping into it."; and [c] "You can stand on the observation platform and enjoy the view forever, but if you lean too far over the guardrail then your time to enjoy the view gets shortened considerably."

COL Ted Mc - That's about one of the best-stated comments I've seen on global warming. If only we could beat it into everyone's head. I agree that we probably contribute to GW. I disagree entirely that we are the major cause of it -- we simply have not been recording data for long enough on a geological timescale to make that determination accurately.

SN Greg Wright - Seaman; It's one that usually gets greeted with a "Well, I know it works in practice - BUT does it work in theory?" responses.

Forgive me for repeating myself but indoctrination has replaced education in American schools and campuses. What else do you expect?

And, again, I recommend The Devil's Pleasure Palace as providing the greatest insight into how this came about

CPT Jack Durish - Captain; There isn't anything inherently wrong with "indoctrination" - it's what is being "indoctrinated" that counts.

However, and here I agree completely, when "indoctrination" takes away from actually educating the students so that they are literate, numerate, and capable of critical thinking then you have a situation where the chance of tyranny increases to dangerous levels.
