This map shows the US really has 11 separate 'nations' with entirely different cultures

Yes, in some ways we do. We need to go back to focusing on what unites us.

The map is at least in the case of Michigan, inaccurate. The rural parts of Michigan have a culture far more similar to the Midlands and greater Appalachia.
I suggest a map that separates American Culture based on population density would be more accurate. It is my experience that I, a white male with latino cultural roots have far more in common and relate much easier to rural black farmers in the deep south, than urban latinos in L.A., Chicago, and New York. As a Northern Michigander I have little in common with the denizens of Detroit, Lansing, or Grand Rapids.
