Also the last 23 ships included VLS (vertical launch system) and other improvements. These boats are designated 688I for "Improved" other improvements included the ships whistle door. One the 688 class the ships whistle door was hinged on the bottom allowing water to collect in the ships whistle during rough seas. In the 688I boats the ships whistle was hinged from the top.
