Most of the Soldiers was exposed to the burn pits, unless you are diagnosed with lung problems you get zero percent. This is good because later on the roads you can have lung issues. It's sad we have SM served 20 years of service get like 30% disability because SM never went to sick call get everything documented vs. a private who never graduated from basic training get 50% because a drill sergeant yell at him and got PTSD. I used to tracks these med board for those privates.

Doesn't matter HOW much you have documented. VA will find a way to screw you. Because I don't have to use a Wheel Chair and I can still walk I am stuck at 20% for a Spinal Fusion that was done wrong. They ran the screws all the way through my vertebra. One of the heads is actually snapped and they left my spine at the wrong angle. It looks literally like a Lightening Bolt. I won't even get into the pain level that I deal with. If I had of gotten out when it happened instead of staying in for an additional 8 years, I MAY have gotten a higher rating but I enjoyed my Job so I pushed it so I could meet the minimum requirements to stay in. Paying for that now.

Never go to the VA direct when filing a claim. Instead go to a liaison from one of the service organizations first.

I was in OIF 1 myself and yes the burn pits were bad and he'd to be logically containing constituents that shouldn't have been breathed in. The stench was noxious to everyone but one female Soldier who thought she smelled chicken. I am not sure if she was hallucinating after too many MREs or not.
Burn pits were to my knowledge at all bases that I was at. It was how they eliminated waste. But not all chemicals and matter is safe to be burned where people can breath in. I suspect the VA will add a service connection to this 75 years from now. But for now, all those that are affected need to somehow find proof when there was nothing to be had but a DD-214 reflecting you were there.

While I do believe there are SM who have some significant issues due to burn pits and exposures. I think the number of SM claiming issues is overinflated.

Especially if these people smoke cigs all the time in the war zone and in a burn pit/generator environment. then it is just magnified/made 20 times worse. I know being around generators and mogas and diesel/jp4/jp8 is not good and I am ok after deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan where I always smelled this exhaust. I am 53 but I stay healthy so part of it could be genetics, exposure and personal bad smoking habits making them blaming the burn pits for their actual smoking habit. Vaping is a good alternative. I know of 2 smokers who have told me since they switched they have saved money and they have cut their dosages in half on the eventual way to kicking smoking completely.
