This brings up a common misconception of the deployment of black units in France. When the AEF arrived in France the French wanted our troops onto the line ASAP. Pershing needed time to retrain and re equip many units. He appeased the French by deploying most of the units that had been under his command in Mexico. Most of these were black units. It was not a slight, he sent them in because they were ready. All of the Artillery had been replaced with French equipment.

I'm at Ft Huachuca where those units were stationed, don't go out on the Parade Field alone
