They can definetly look as some other options everytime I go away for training I see massive amounts of wasted money. For example I went to a 5 week long class and I had to stay at a hotel because the Army doesn't offer/have housing for TDY soldiers. My hotel bill for this was 3500 dollars, almost 30 people with me do the math 105k for that one class that over 1Million in housing for the year in this course alone. That military base has at least ten courses going at a time. Why cant they just make a facility to house us it can't possbly be less expensive to put us up in hotels. I think they should take a deep look at how money is spent before they chop soldiers out of the Army and put them back into a strained workforce.
How many of those birds are flying now?
The F-35 program is costing far far far more than the F-22 program did and running into far more problems, and it's ostensibly supposed to be the low side of our high-low setup.

Ignoring navy ships which cost Billions each, I will highlight the cost of aircraft and unmanned aircraft. This seems ludicrous to me how much these cost, and I work in Army acquisitions and am privy to how much the army spends on certain things. Even for me, these figures make me blanche. Some of the math doesn't add up, so I researched some more and the additional money in each program accounts for R&D and manpower and logistics such as spare parts etc.
