This is funny. I'm willing to bet that most people couldn't tell you the names of more than five or six Presidents let alone rank any of them in relation to all the others. But this survey is purportedly based on the opinions of academics. Right. That'll be fair considering the ideological persuasion of academics.

CPT Jack Durish - I agree it is all about humanity. It is how well they mitigate their human short comings against the needs of the country that makes a President good or bad.

CPT Jack Durish - Not to be argumentative here ... but IMV, there isn't any tossup. Were it not for Washington, there wouldn't be any country for Lincoln to preside over. Don't get me wrong ... I've a lot of respect for Lincoln ... but Washington is in a class all his own.

LTC (Join to see) - It's true that Washington not only served as President but also played a key role in making it possible for there to be a President. He also shunned offers to become king. There's also the fact that he invented the office, drawing upon his military experience to delegate authority to a staff (Cabinet). None of this was specified in the Constitution and it was a good enough idea to persist to this day. However, Lincoln was a significant President too. The consensus, even among his Cabinet, was to allow the South to secede. It was by his will and his will alone that the Union was preserved. And it was by the love of the soldiers that they fought for that union even while being led very poorly until Lincoln could find them decent generals.

CPT Jack Durish - Truly not an argument worth having ... I agree that Washington and Lincoln are the top two. In my mind, I give Washington the edge for having served in the military ... but I also recognize Lincoln as the POTUS that saved the union. I'll settle for a draw ... ;)

William Henry Harrison was only in office 31 days and still fared better than five other Presidents!

I think it interesting seeing the switch of 2 and 3 after 2000. I'm wondering if people who experienced the depression getting old and dying is partially causal in that switch.

I'm surprised George H. W. Bush didn't do better. Likely hard to get noticed right after Reagan.
