I played sandlot ball as a kid. Organized sports like Little League were little heard of in those days. When they arrived, many of us shied away because there were too many adults involved. It seems that adults spoil everything, like in giving participation trophies. Maybe this is why I never grew up...

Can't lay all the blame on participation trophies, but have an interesting anecdotal story.... Spent the holidays with my cousin. He has 3 kids. The oldest did not have participation trophies in sports, the middle did, and the youngest did not have participation trophies after the school realized that it was not a great social experiment. Needless to say, the oldest and youngest kids are competitive winners, and the middle child (who only got participation trophies) is upset at the world not being fair! Imagine that....
