Instead of white washing what the president is supposed say, tell the truth, it may make people mad, but it's far better than lying to them.

His staff is just trying to keep him out of trouble. If he would listen more (some?), and seek to understand 2d and 3d order effects--rather than react constantly--he would cause less turmoil and be heard better. And be criticized less. But he's not going to do that.

Maj John Bell
As a Staff Officer, it was my job to tell the General EXACTLY what I thought, including things I knew he did not want to hear. When I walked out of the office, with legal orders that I didn't like there were only two choice:
_Carry out the orders enthusiastically like it was my idea, or
_Resign effective immediately
It was not my job to omit, shade, or "manage" the General to the decision I thought was best. If I caught someone doing that to me. I'd have them escorted off the property and tell them "we will may you your effects." If their car keys, coat, and hat were still on their desk... too bad.
We are in this mess because for far too long, we have had leaders who will not ruffle feathers.
